In November, 1997, a service of rededication was held for Alma Temple, which had originally been dedicated sixty years before on October 31, 1937.

Here are some readings from that anniversary service.

        Service of Rededication—Responsive Scripture Reading

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will still be praising thee.
Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.
For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: And he said,
Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth
beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before
thee with all their heart: Who has kept with thy servant David my father that
thou promisedst him: thou speakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it
with thine hand, as it is this day.
Therefore now, Lord God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk efore me as thou hast walked before me.
And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou
spakest unto thy servant David my father. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee today:
That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.
And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive.

        The Rite of Rededication

The people will stand and join in the response:

Remembering those who have gone before, and looking forward to those who are to come, we renew the setting apart of this Temple to the worship of the living and true God, and to the service of Jesus Christ our Lord.

We devote it to the preaching of the gospel of the grace of God for the conversion of sinners and for the sanctification of believers, and to the education of Christians in a knowledge of spiritual truth, in all the activities of Christian life.

Here shall the incense of prayer and praise continue to ascend to God. Here shall the ordinances of the Lord’s house be sacredly observed.

Here shall the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever, be sounded out for the salvation of the perishing and shine as a perpetual light to guide God’s pilgrims through the night of time to the land of everlasting light.

Here may children of sin and sorrow find a refuge from despair and ruin, and Christians a harbor to which they can resort when the tempest is high, and be safe.

Here may the Holy Sprit pour down on hearts as on the day of Pentecost. May no unholy spirit of pride or worldliness find entrance here.

And may God graciously accept this offering anew of a Temple in His name—an offering made by grateful hearts and willing hands—and bless every heart that hares in this gift.

May multitudes here be born to God, so that when all these here today shall have gone to their eternal rest, others will take up the service until Jesus comes and all His are gathered home.

To the glory of God, our Father, by whose favor this Temple has been built and preserved; to the honor of Jesus the Christ, the Son of the living God and our Saviour; to the praise of the Holy Spirit, source of life and light and holiness,

We dedicate and consecrate this Temple.

        We Dedicate This Temple, Lord

        Tune: “God of Our Fathers”

We dedicate, dear Lord, this Temple fair,
To be Thine own,—a child of fervent prayer.
Through stress and strain, faith wrought these walls to raise
A Temple, Lord, to echo with Thy praise.

A vision once,—today this Temple stands,
A token of that house “not made with hands,”
Here ‘mid God’s hills, to which are lifted eyes
For daily strength, and find some glad surprise.

Let beauteous things which here the eye may see,
Speak of that good our souls may find in Thee.
Here let the stream of Thy salvation flow
Till ransomed ones shall withThy likeness glow.

        Here break those chains which bind the souls of men;
Give life, and hope, by which they rise again.
        In paths of holiness their footsteps guide;
Walk Thou in fellowship their paths beside.

Give voice to calls no list’ning ear can spurn.
Build on its altars fires to live, and burn.
Through unborn years may hallelujahs rise
To greet the ransomed hosts beyond the skys.

From service here, within this Temple fair,
Fit Thou our souls for service “over there”
Where John no Temple saw, within that place
Where all who serve shall see their Savior’s face.
          Amen!
